Our Little Girl is Growing Up

Malinda sent me an email the other day that mentioned the fact that I was growing up. She is right in a lot of ways because I have never felt like a grown up before. I have never worked at a serious job, where I had serious responsibilities, or where I was considered a professional. Now that I am entering the grown up professional world of teaching, I have to admit it feels nice. I know McIntosh is a small school system, in a small crappy town, but they have treated me like they are thrilled to have me; like I am someone valuable to them. I get letters from the school board telling me what is going to happen in the next week, and how excited they are to have me as a member of their team, and it feels very nice. I got a letter from the principal yesterday detailing our first full week of school starting on the 7th. It involves a lot of training, but there is also a lot of time to spend "Working in Rooms," and I have to admit that I look forward to that part the most.

I could not help but notice that their are quite a few male teachers at MCA. I told my friend Tammi, maybe I'll meet a nice boy. She reminded me of Phil and I felt sort of bad, but I have to admit, the thought of meeting someone else is on my mind. All of the social studies teachers are male - one is named Rosenbaum - a nice Jew boy. Hmmmm . . .

In the next few days, I am going to try and put up some pictures of me modeling my new school clothes so you can tell me what to wear on the day of New Teacher Orientation (August 1), Open House (August 10) and the first day of school (August 11).

I know what you mean about not feeling grown up. I'm glad you feel like an adult and I"m super glad your job is treating you like a valuable member of the team. It sounds like they really have things organized.

Maybe you will meet a nice boy. Maybe he will live near you and you will car pool to work and fall madly in love. It will be a slow romance that begins by being friends, but turns into something more one late evening while you're both working late....

Ooh, I am so excited for you! I can't wait to see the fashion show and for you to fall in love. New love is so exciting, and I am glad that you are getting excited about that part of your life. You deserve a great job and a great guy. Good luck!

Oh, I LOVE school supplies! I wish I could help you decorate your classroom. I'm so happy for you! Watch out for the football coaches, they always teach Social Studies. Stick with the soccer coaches, they are always cooler.

I am so late putting in my 2 cents, b/c of not being home.

I am very proud of you and think anyone foolish that would not consider you a valuable asset. You have a passion for your subject and desire to teach your students. Your first day marks a new year of young minds that will forever be in your gratitude.

I am very happy for you.

You are certainly a valuable asset, but I know what you mean about feeling like a grown up for the first time. Dr. Remler told me something very important before I started teaching-- she told me to write down every single thing that happened to me that first day because so much will happen afterword and it's hard to remember the little things. She was absolutely right. I went back and read what I wrote that first day and I couldn't believe what it was like. There's nothing like it and I wish you all the best. Good luck!
